Study weekend at York St John’s College

Over the weekend of 21 – 23 April the Society held its 11th study weekend and 10th on the campus of York St John’s College.

The content for the weekend was centred around the Logge Wills, the major transcription project undertaken by the Society and which will be published later in the year.

The talks were themed around a selection of the testators and their bequests and included:

·        Introduction to Wills by Dr Ann Rycraft of the Centre for Medieval Studies in York

·        An update on the project by Dr Lesley Boatwright

·        Court and City: the ‘great and the good’ in Logge by the Research Officer, Wendy Moorhen

·        Word and Wordsmiths: books found in the Logge wills by Dr Anne Sutton

·        A Case Study: the poet Richard Roos by Dr Boatwright

·        Clerical, Medical and Litigators: wills of those who cared for the soul, the body and the pocket by Mary O’Regan

·        Silver and Salets: references to metals for display, adornment and protection by the Society’s President, Peter Hammond

The traditional medieval banquet was held at Barley Hall and there were opportunities for delegates to enjoy the delights of the city of York.

A full review will appear in the Summer Bulletin and on the website in the near future.
