Activities of the Richard III Society

The Richard III Society is an organisation based in the UK with branches throughout the world. It is run by volunteer members and operates on different levels.  There are a range of activities and events organised by the Society which are open to all members to participate in at their own pace. Many members are content to simply receive and enjoy the Society’s regular publications whilst others take a more active role.  In addition the Society carries out broader and more general activities in the fields of research, publications and reputation management.  

The Society’s activities can be summarised, in no particular order, as follows:

Visits
Visits
to places associated with Richard III and his times, mainly in England, but a continental visit usually takes place annually.

Commemorative Events
Three commemorative event link to Events/Commemorative take place annually. In March, services to commemorate the death of Richard’s wife Anne; in August, a visit to Leicestershire to mark the anniversary of Richard’s death at Bosworth; and in December, a visit to Fotheringhay, Richard’s birthplace, for a Christmas lunch and carol service.

Celebratory Events
Special celebratory events are organised to mark anniversaries within the Society, such as the 50th anniversary of its re-founding in 2006.

Study Weekends
Study weekends
, usually held in York, for small groups. These are designed to introduce members to aspects of the late medieval period.

Conferences
Triennial conferences
usually held at UK universities. Leading academics in the field of medieval history are invited to present papers.

Research
The Society facilitates research into the life and times of Richard III.  Members have the opportunity to join the Research Community and group research projects.

The Barton Library
The Society has an extensive library of  non-fiction books, papers, novels and audio-visual material which can be borrowed by members.

Publications
The Society has an active publications programme either through the Richard III and Yorkist History Trust or under its own auspices. The latter publications are usually monographs, booklets and guides. We shall shortly be publishing the results of the Wills projects.

Education
The Society is working to promote the teaching of late medieval history in schools and is producing an education .

AGM and Members’ Day
The Annual General Meeting and Members’ Day is held in London, and every third year in another UK city. This is the main occasion for members to meet each other and network. In addition to the formal proceedings, other attractions include a guest speaker, craft and book stalls.

Media
Through the Press Records Officer and Reputation Management Officer, the Society monitors and responds to all media publicity surrounding Richard III and his times. The Society also welcomes approaches from the media and general public regarding Richard III.
