![]() Schools’ Competition
Prize Giving The Society’s second
celebratory event, to mark its re-founding in 1956, was held in the
historic Barnard’s Inn Hall in Holborn, London, on Friday 19th May
in the presence of its Patron, HRH The Duke of Gloucester, KG, GCVO.
The event was a double celebration with the awards being presented
to the prize winners of the Society’s recent schools’
competition for posters and essays with King Richard III as
the theme. The Society was delighted to welcome seven of the nine
prize winners to the event together with their parents and teachers. The evening began
with two talks by members. The Society’s historian, John Saunders,
spoke about the Society from a historical perspective and John Ashdown-Hill
talked about his quest to find the DNA of King Richard. The audience
enthusiastically received both talks. Society chairman, Dr Phil Stone,
spoke about the background to the Schools’ competition which had been
initiated by John Ashdown-Hill, and invited the Patron to present
the prizes to the winners and to the representatives of the schools. All the poster entries
for the exhibition were exhibited around the Hall and copies of the
winning essays were presented to the Patron, families and schools
as well as being available to the members. Whilst the Hall was
quickly transformed for the reception, a photo-call took place in
the courtyard with the Patron, prize winners, teachers and speakers
whilst parents and members of the Society looked on. The remainder of
the evening was given over to the enjoyment of good food, wine and
conversation. A full report will appear in the Autumn Bulletin.
