York House Books for 1461 – 1490 (2 volumes)

Editor: Lorraine Attreed
Publisher: Alan Sutton for Richard III & Yorkist History Trust
Year & Place of Pub: 1991 – Gloucester
ISBN: 0862999367
Pages: Vol 1: 410 / Vol 2: 788

A new and complete edition of the York House Books for 1461-1490. This edition provides some of the most important documents from the York city archives, including details of royal visits, proclamations and political events in the Wars of the Roses, as well as local bye-laws, craft regulations and arrangements for the performance of the York mystery plays. They provide an unparalleled view of Richard, who was York’s greatest patron, both as duke of Gloucester and as king of England. Two volume set with introduction and name and subject index.

Review:
‘This comprehensive modern edition completely supersedes the earlier version. The relationship between the city and Richard as duke of Gloucester and later as king is well documented. The council’s chagrin at Richard’s death … is clearly evident in the record. There is much here for the urban historian … and for the social, economic and local historian.’

Review:
‘The volume would rank high on any medievalist’s reading list … the ingenious and detailed working-out of its compiler, John Vale, who is securely linked with the London book-copyist’s world … a satisfyingly full picture of the literary and political interests of a family prominent in the London civic hierarchy.’
