Annual Bosworth Visit
23 August, 2009

The Society visited Bosworth for its annual commemoration of the Battle, where a service was held by the Rev. John Plant at St. James’ Church, Sutton Cheney, to commemorate the fallen in the battle.  It was attended by Society members from around the world and wreaths were placed on either side of the Society’s commemorative plaque, which carries the wording now used in the annual ‘In Memoriam’ notice:

PLANTAGENET, RICHARD - Remember before God, Richard III, King of England, and those who fell at Bosworth Field, having kept faith, 22nd August, 1485. 'Loyaulté me Lie'.

During the service, the wreaths were hung on behalf of the Australasian and the Canadian Branches of the Society by Marian Mitchell and Howard Choppin, members of the Executive Committee. The address given by Rev. Plant was on the subject of the difficulty of getting back to an authentic version, whether this applied to the New Testament, as in the second lesson, or to the history of a battle, as with Bosworth.

After the service, members had lunch in the Village Hall and then went to the Bosworth Battlefield Centre

where several members had an opportunity to meet author Philippa Gregory, visit the Exhibition, watch the re-enactment of the battle where, unfortunately, Richard lost again, and enjoy the special events of the weekend.  The Society had a tent to promote the organisation, enrol members, and sell Ricardian publications, etc.

The Society has provided displays in the church at Sutton Cheney and at the Bosworth Battlefield Centre, including the recently installed touch screen portal in the entrance of the Exhibition, which deals with Richard III and the battle.
